There’s a lot of talk about supporting British farming.
Here’s a very easy way to actually do it.
Buy British. And buy small.
When you buy a bottle of Wild Fox Gin, you’re not buying from a huge drinks company with a clever countryside-looking label.
You’re buying from an actual working Lancashire farm.
Our distillery sits right here on the farm. Our gin is distilled here, bottled here, labelled here, packed here and sent out from here.
No enormous production line.
No warehouse full of thousands of cases.
No boardroom several hundred miles away.
Just a small British business trying to make a really good product and keep doing what we love.
Where does your money actually go?
When you spend money with a small business like ours, it doesn’t disappear into the turnover of a multinational.
It pays British alcohol duty.
It pays our suppliers.
It buys bottles, labels and ingredients.
It keeps our little distillery running.
It helps us employ other local businesses.
It supports our farm.
And, occasionally, it buys the distiller a coffee and keeps her sane.
There are plenty of cheaper bottles of gin in the supermarket.
We know that.
We’re never going to make gin as cheaply as somebody producing hundreds of thousands of bottles.
But that isn’t really what we’re trying to do.
We’re trying to make something properly.
British farming isn’t just about what’s on your dinner plate
When people say support British farming, we tend to think about buying British milk, meat and vegetables.
And absolutely -do that.
But British farms have diversified in hundreds of different ways to survive.
Farm shops. Holiday cottages. Wedding venues. Breweries. Distilleries. Cafés. Experiences.
For us, it happens to be gin.
Wild Fox started here on our family farm in Lancashire, and every bottle that leaves the distillery helps another tiny rural business keep going.
So perhaps supporting British farming can occasionally involve tonic.
Small businesses can’t outspend the big ones.
But we can out-care them.
We know what’s in the bottle.
We know who made it.
We know where it was made.
If you email us, you’re very likely talking to the person who distilled it.
And if something isn’t right, there isn’t a customer-service department.
There’s me.
That’s the difference.
So here’s our tiny bit of politics.
Whatever party you support, whatever you think Westminster should or shouldn’t be doing, there is one decision completely in your hands:
where you spend your money.
When you can, choose the farmer.
Choose the independent.
Choose the family business.
Choose the company manufacturing something here in Britain rather than simply sticking a Union Jack on the packaging.
