A few of our woolly residents had managed to escape and, rather than making their way back to where they belonged, they headed straight for the distillery.
Not content with standing outside, they began ramming the door in what appeared to be a rather determined attempt to get inside.
Quite what they thought was going on in there, we’re not sure.
Perhaps word has got around about the gin.
Either way, the sheep were clearly keen to get involved in the family business.
It’s moments like these that remind us how unusual our little business really is.
Wild Fox Distillery isn’t based on an industrial estate or in a big warehouse. We’re right here on our working family farm in Lancashire, surrounded by fields, animals and the occasional uninvited visitor.
Alongside the day-to-day running of the farm, we distil our own gin using our copper stills, Ivy and Kin.
Every bottle is made, labelled and packed here before heading out to our customers.
It’s a busy way of life and certainly not always glamorous. However, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Although we might have a word with the sheep about respecting opening hours.
With Christmas approaching, there’s plenty of talk about shopping small and supporting British businesses.
And we couldn’t agree more.
When people think about supporting British farming, they naturally think of milk, meat, vegetables and the food on their Christmas table.
But farms across Britain have also found new ways to earn a living. From farm shops and holiday cottages to cafés, breweries and distilleries, diversification has become part of rural life.
For our family, that happens to involve gin.
So, when you’re looking for British Christmas gifts this year, it’s worth remembering the little businesses tucked away in the countryside.
Because buying British can support farming in more ways than you might think.
And sometimes, it even involves a gin and tonic.
Here at Wild Fox, we make a range of small-batch gins, including our seasonal Holly & Ivy Christmas Gin.
It’s made with real damsons, sloes, bullace plums, clementine and warming winter spices. A little taste of the Lancashire countryside, bottled ready for Christmas.
We also offer personalised gin bottles, which make lovely presents for somebody who’s difficult to buy for.
Better still, we can gift wrap your bottle, include a personal message and send it directly to their door.
So if you’re looking for a thoughtful British-made Christmas gift, we’d love you to consider something from our farm.
There’s no getting away from the fact that running a small business is challenging.
We can’t compete with the production volumes or advertising budgets of enormous drinks companies.
But what we can offer is something personal.
We know what’s in every bottle because we’re the people making it. We know where it comes from because we’re standing right here.
And when somebody places an order, it genuinely means something to us.
Choosing to shop small this Christmas helps businesses like ours continue doing what we love. It also supports the wider network of British suppliers and independent businesses we rely on.
So whether you’re buying from a farm shop, a local maker or a little distillery in Lancashire, your purchase can make a difference.
As for the sheep, we’re hoping their latest adventure doesn’t become a regular occurrence.
Although, given their determination to get through the distillery door, perhaps we should consider putting them on the Christmas sales team.
They certainly know how to make an entrance.
In the meantime, if you’re looking to buy British this Christmas, we’d be delighted if you thought of Wild Fox.
Support British farming. Shop small. And keep Britain bottled here. 🇬🇧
With love from the farm,
